More than just a Hunting and Fishing Lodge!

Posted by:

Word has gotten out that Choke Canyon Lodge can be more than just a place to stay while hunting, fishing or working in the Three Rivers, TX area. Our customers are now using our property as a “Venue” of sorts. We have recently hosted several weddings, wedding receptions, rehearsal dinner events, graduation parties, family reunions and baby/wedding showers. We didn’t realize our area was in need of a few more choices for this type of service.

My husband and I recently took advantage of this opportunity and held our daughter’s Wedding reception here at the Lodge. I was amazed at how our grounds transformed into a beautiful wedding venue. Our daughter told us that she had so many of the out of town guests ask her “Where did you find this amazing venue?” She just laughed and said “It’s my parents’ hunting and fishing lodge! Crazy. Right?”

One big bonus was that with 18 rooms and an 2 bedroom house located on the property, we were able to house the wedding party, out of town family and a few friends on site the entire weekend! It was so convenient and easy having all the key wedding people all in one location from beginning to end.

If you ever find yourself in need of a Venue in the Three Rivers area, you might just want to put us on your list. I think you might be quite surprised at all we have to offer. And at affordable prices too!

Weekly Fishing Report on KKYX Radio Station

Posted by:

We are very proud to announce that Rick will be doing the Three Rivers/Choke Canyon Fishing report every Saturday morning on San Antonio’s KKYX radio station. It should air during Roy Holley’s “Talk About Texas” show sometime between 8:45 to 9:15 am on 680 AM or 104.9 FM.

Rick will be reporting what’s been biting during the previous week and tips on what to fish with. We hope this will be helpful information for all our fisher friends all around Texas, as this station can even be heard as far as the Houston area. And if you want to listen via the internet, it doesn’t matter where you are! So set your alarm and your radio dial (or better yet, just download the KKYX app) and tune in for the latest news on the lake conditions. Then pick up your phone and call us to book your room! We can’t wait to see all our old friends again, or for our first timers, get to meet you and show you what we’ve got to offer! What are you waiting for??

The Lake Is Up!

lake_is_up

All the recent flooding in Texas has been devastating to so many people. Not much good has come out of it except that many lakes, aquifers and watersheds filled to capacity and it brought parts of Texas out of the drought we were experiencing.

Our lake, Choke Canyon Lake has been the recipient of much of this rainfall and run off and we couldn’t be happier. Today we are at 41% full. That may not sound very full to you, but our lake hasn’t had that much water in it for over 2 years! We are excited about the upcoming fishing possibilities. My husband and I were out this week fishing Mason Point and the Hydrilla has already begun growing back. We saw some areas that were already matting. In the weeks to come this will bring excellent BIG fish opportunities. Over this past weekend a woman weighed in a 10.67 lb Largemouth down at the Calliham Store, an official weigh station for the ShareLunker program.

So get your rods ready and pack your bags and head to Three Rivers. We’d be happy to put you up for a few nights and give you all the latest news we have on what’s biting what. And currently we are offering Summer Specials starting as low as $89 per night and $450 per week. And the icing on the cake is our beautiful view of Choke Canyon Lake (we’re the only lodging offering this feature!!) See you soon!

The Crappie Are Here!!

Posted by:

bigcrappieThis is just a quick little post to let all the crappie fishermen out there know that the crappie are here! We went out yesterday to Choke Canyon Lake with our good friend and catfish/crappie guide, John Brosig and caught a mess of GOOD crappie. The water temperature was a nice 70 degrees and boy were they biting. It didn’t take us long to catch 50! We even burned up a filet knife cleaning them all!

John called just a while ago to say the he limited out (75 crappie) with the customers he had today. Warning, bring some minnows when you come! There is only one store in this area that sells minnows (the supplier comes every Thursday to restock) and they told me that they sold out on Friday morning. John said there were lots of folks on the lake today trying to catch some crappie on jigs but they were not having near the success as we did on live bait. So, call today to book your room and head down south to Three Rivers, Texas. Come get ‘em while the gettin’s good!

Recent Fishing at Choke Canyon Lake

This time of year brings lots of fun for those who enjoy fishing. The months of February and March are great months to catch monster Black Bass, loads of White Bass and my personal favorite, the delicious crappie. The water is starting to warm up and the fish are biting!

A few weeks ago there was a 10 lb. and a 12 lb. Largemouth Bass caught in our lake. The news of this gives me the itch to go bass fishing, but I’ve decided that I’d rather try to put some crappie in our freezer since they only bite really well for a limited time. Last Saturday, we were able to snag 8 good size keepers and they tasted just as good as I remember from last year. We caught ours using minnows and I’ve heard they are biting jigs as well.

Our friends report that White Bass are excellent on small spinner baits and small rattle traps. The fellows that caught those big bass I mentioned earlier said that they were throwing red or orange spinner baits and crank baits and fishing in 6 to 8 feet of water. I’ve heard that pumpkinseed soft plastic worms and lizards are snagging a few big ones as well. And the catfish are always biting on punch bait in both shallow and deep water.

Don’t let the low levels of our lake scare you off from taking a trip down here to do some fishing. There is still a lot of water to fish and a lot of big fish waiting to be caught! I’ll keep my ears open for all the latest fishing reports from the locals and will try to pass that along to you if you inquire. See you at the lake!

Choke Canyon State Park is for More Than Just Fishing!

Posted by:

IMG_2257Fishing is one of the activities that my husband and I enjoy doing together as often as we can. One of the reasons we moved to this area was to enjoy all that Choke Canyon Reservoir had to offer. We love the challenge of catching Largemouth Bass, the great taste of fresh crappie and catfish, and the excitement of White Bass when they school. Living within a 5 minute drive from a boat ramp makes it especially tempting to load up and head out almost on a daily basis.

Besides fishing, I really didn’t think this place had that much more to offer. Much to my surprise, I have come to thoroughly enjoy observing all the wildlife in our Choke Canyon State Park and surrounding area. There are White-tail Deer, Axis Deer, Javelina, Wild Turkey and even alligators, just to mention a few!

Mitzi's big FishOh and I forgot to mention the birds! Little did I know that this is the place to be if you love birding. My daughter is a wildlife biologist and when she visits she almost always makes a trip to our State Park to do some hiking on the nature trails to see what birds and wildlife she can observe. The spring migration brings flycatchers, warblers, vireos and orioles. If you’re lucky, you may even get a good look at a Great Kiskadee. The wintering months bring another group of birds including sparrows and hawks galore. This is just a short list of the ones I can remember. If you enjoy wading and shorebirds, you’ll get your fill of those as well.

So, if you are looking for something to do besides fishing while visiting our beautiful South Texas area, you may want to take a trip to visit the Choke Canyon State Park and see what interesting creatures are just roaming and flying around for your enjoyment. Be sure to stop at the park’s Ranger Station and check out the information they have available for you to completely enjoy the park. See you there!
